How do I donate?
You can easily donate by hitting the “Leave a tip” button above. That takes you to a Monzo page and you can choose any amount to give.
Do I need a Monzo account to donate?
No, you can use any debit card to give money. I use Monzo as a payments system because there are no handling fees to pay on either my side or yours.
Where does the money go?
100% of the money goes into my bank account. I spend it on trying out new pubs to review for you and all the hundreds of other subscribers to Edinburgh Pub Reviews.
The newsletter is not my main job, and I do it because I love it and think it’s useful to other pub lovers in the city. However, I treat the donations I get as income and pay tax on them.
Why are you asking for donations?
I want to keep Edinburgh Pub Reviews free so that it can be enjoyed by everyone. A few other free Substacks have similar models, where they have an option for readers to donate if they feel willing and able. I don’t want my reviews to go behind a paywall.
How much should I give?
There is no obligation to give anything at all. I’m grateful for all donations, however big or small. I would say the most common donation is of £5, roughly the cost of a pint in an Edinburgh pub these days.
Is there a paid version of your Substack?
No, everything I publish on Edinburgh Pub Reviews is free. I currently do not have any plans to start a paid subscription.
How else can I support Edinburgh Pub Reviews?
The best thing you can do is to spread the word and encourage others to subscribe. You can either do this by word of mouth, or by pressing the “share” button on any article and posting it to social media or on a WhatsApp group. I’m so grateful to those who do this.
