What’s happened since I last wrote about The Oxford Bar? Well, there’s been an excellent new TV adaptation of Rebus, the fictional character most associated with the iconic pub.
If it does come back for a second series, Ian Rankin has already said he’ll be “having words” with the show’s writer, Gregory Burke. Rankin says he found it a little too violent compared to his books – but praised it overall.
I thought the “reimagined” version worked well, tackling some modern themes in a perceptive and sensitive (and violent) way. Though I’m not sure how a younger Rebus affords a flat on the Vennel steps in 2024.
What else has happened since my original review? Oh yes, Lorraine Kelly’s visit was headline news.
I’m still waiting for the day my visit to a pub makes the Scottish Daily Express. In the meantime, here’s the original review.
The chaser
I’m pleased to see the government has put its outdoor smoking ban on hold after some pretty vociferous backlash from those in the hospitality industry, and of course those in the tobacco industry too. The Guardian, which broke the news, said: “No 10 officials privately believe that banning people from lighting up in pub gardens is ‘an unserious’ policy and is not backed by good evidence showing that it harms non-smokers.”
However, it still doesn’t change my view that there are far bigger threats to pubs than this. Let’s hope there is some relief in today’s Budget.

Thank you for all the kind messages after last week’s anniversary newsletter. It really is lovely to read them all, because a) it reflects what I wrote about how great the people of Edinburgh are, and b) who doesn’t like an inbox full of praise?
A special thanks to those of you who read to the end, and generously sent me some money. I’ll continue to supply you with new reviews for free, as long as you’re a subscriber. Though if you wanted to leave me a wee tip, you can do by hitting the button below.
