The Percy – Stuff your face
I visited recently for the first time in a while and fell in love all over again.
Hello. I’ve been very busy recently, with work and travel and summer wedding season. Which means I’ve seen less of the Edinburgh pub scene than I’d like to recently. It’s also meant I’ve had less time to write about the pubs I am able to get to. So for the next few weeks, I’ll be alternating between old and new reviews. I hope that, by the end of the Festival, we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled programming, of one new pub a week.
This week, I’m going back to the first ever pub I wrote about on Edinburgh Pub Reviews. I’ll often bring it up when asked about my favourite pubs in the city. Often, people have heard of it but not actually visited. I urge you to head right down the bottom of Easter Road and check it out. You’ll be treated to a warm welcome, great beer and a choice of either traditional pub food or a fantastic Polish menu.
My brother was in town recently and asked to go there, after we’d stuffed ourselves a few months ago on his last visit. I happily obliged. If anything, the portions have got even bigger. My pork schnitzel hardly fit on the plate and I barely got through half before asking to box it up and take it home. But this isn’t a “quantity over quality” place. No, it’s proper home-cooked stuff made by people who clearly take care. They just also happen to be very generous when plating up.
Since I published the original piece last year, I came across some new information about the pub’s interior. You’ll find it at the top of the review (click below), but if you want to read more about The Percy’s surprising history, you can read it on page 10 of this PDF. Oh, and while you’re at it, flick to page 6 of the same document for a summary of the Scottish Tall Font, the traditional – now rare – way of dispensing cask ale in this country.
Here’s the review.
The chaser
If you were an early subscriber and already read the original Percy review, then thank you for being here from the start. Don’t worry; there will be a brand new pub review in your inbox next week. I’ve still got a long list of pubs to write about, but expect to read about The Sheep Heid Inn, The Roseburn and The Bullfinch in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can have a look at the archive or the map for all previous posts.
